PIXEL Bots are configurable chatbot interviews that screen candidates via SMS or the Avionté 24/7 mobile app. Recruiters build interview scripts with weighted questions, associate them with job postings, and send them to talent manually or automatically. When a candidate passes the screening threshold, PIXEL offers available follow-up interview times from the recruiter's calendar.
For an overview of all PIXEL features, see Avionté PIXEL.
Key Takeaways
- The Interview Builder lets you configure questions across three sections — Opening, Experience, and Closing — each with its own question types, weights, and Required/Preferred settings that control how candidates are scored and whether a follow-up interview is offered.
- Bots can be associated with specific job postings to trigger automatically when talent applies, or sent manually through Avionté Chat, from the talent record, or via mass messaging.
- Candidates who meet the passing threshold are offered follow-up interview times pulled directly from the recruiter's PIXEL Calendar. Set your calendar availability before building bots.
Prerequisites
- User accounts must have PIXEL user claims activated. See User Administration (PIXEL) for more information.
- The Interview Bot Admin user claim is required to associate bots with General Apply job boards.
- Jobs must exist in BOLD to associate bots with postings. See Create a Job for more information.
- Set up your PIXEL Calendar availability before creating bots. PIXEL references your calendar when offering follow-up interview times to candidates who pass screening.
The PIXEL Bots Screen
PIXEL bots work as the first touchpoint with a candidate and run on smartphones. If a talent passes a chatbot interview, they can schedule a follow-up in-person interview with a recruiter. When recruiters log in, the results of completed sessions — including new candidate interviews that passed screening — are waiting for them.
To access, click PIXEL Bots from the Automation menu.
The PIXEL Bots screen lists all interview bots in your account. From here you can create new bots, edit existing ones, and manage job associations.
Create a New Interview Bot
The Interview Builder lets you define the questions a bot asks candidates, organized into three sections: Opening, Experience, and Closing. Each section has its own available question types.
To create a new interview bot:
- Click Create New. The Interview Builder screen appears.
- Enter a name for the interview bot. The interview name displays along with an auto-generated bot ID. The ID is black and the status is green (Active).
- The Opening and Closing questions display default text but can be customized.
If you have modified the opening or closing question before, the system remembers those modifications and offers them as an option. In the Closing message, you can specify a custom message for candidates who pass the interview. - To add questions, click the + button in a prompt section. A menu of available question types appears.
- Each question has its own options depending on the question type. See Question Types below.
- Set the Weight for each question. Weight determines the relative importance of a question against the overall rating. A weight of 0 means the question does not count toward the candidate's overall rating. Weight is set to 3 by default.
- Select whether the question is Required or Preferred. If Required, a failing answer is a deal-breaker — if an applicant fails any Required question, regardless of weight, they are not prompted to schedule a follow-up interview.
- You can drag and drop questions within a column to change the order in which they appear.
- Click Save to save the interview.
Question Types
For Opening, Experience, and Closing Questions, each question type can be used once. Yes and No Questions can be used 3 times each per category, for up to 9 total across the bot. Freeform Questions are unlimited, though keeping the bot concise improves the candidate experience.
Selecting a question type opens a customizable panel.
Each question has an information icon (?) that displays what the question is about when hovered.
Available Question Types for Opening
| Question Type | Description | Examples |
| Introduction | The first thing the bot displays to the candidate. | "Let's get started with the interview." |
| Salary | Allows the recruiter to set a desired salary range (per hour or per year). The candidate is asked what salary they would like, and the system rates the response based on the range set. Once added, it cannot be added again to the same section. If the initial answer is outside the set range, the candidate is asked for the minimum they will accept. |
$7 to $15 Per Hour "What are your hourly wage expectations?" |
| Work Authorization | Asks whether the candidate is authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. Yes/no, self-reported. | "Are you authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship?" |
| Commute Time | Asks the candidate for their address and rates the response based on the distance to the job's work site location in BOLD. A 30-minute commute or less receives full points. Anything more fails the question. The 30-minute threshold is not configurable. | "If you'd like me to calculate the commute time, enter the address you'd be commuting from. Otherwise, reply 'no'." |
| Education | Allows the recruiter to set a minimum desired education level. The system rates the candidate's answer by comparing it to the desired level. Options: High school/GED, Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, Doctoral. |
Minimum: Bachelor's "What's the highest level of education you have completed?" |
| Security Clearance | The recruiter sets a desired security clearance level. The bot asks if the candidate has a government clearance and, if so, what level. Options: Confidential, Secret, Top Secret, TS/SCI. |
"Do you currently hold a government security clearance?" If yes: "What level security clearance do you currently have?" |
| Request Resource | An open-ended question used to determine the candidate's familiarity with a particular resource. | "Do you have a [resource] available to share at this time?" |
| Freeform Question | An open-ended question for custom needs or questions about the interview itself. | "What are your thoughts on this interview process?" |
| Yes Question | A question that rates a Yes answer positively. | "Have you worked as a Registered Nurse in the last two years?" |
| No Question | A question that rates a No answer positively. | "Have you ever been charged with a federal crime?" |
| Yes/No Freeform Response | An open-ended question with a conditional follow-up response depending on the candidate's answer. Not weighted or scored. | "Do you enjoy working as a business analyst?"; if yes, display "Good to hear!" |
Available Question Types for Experience
Available types: Skill, Freeform Question, Yes Question, No Question, Yes/No Freeform Response.
| Question Type | Description | Examples |
| Skill | Asks the candidate about a specific skill (entered by the recruiter) with a time requirement. Unique to the Experience section. Includes an "Ask about confidence" option. The talent record in BOLD is updated with the response under "Resume/CV Tags." |
[1 year] of [warehouse]. "How many years of experience do you have with Warehouse?" |
Available Question Types for Closing
Available types: Start Date, Freeform Question, Yes Question, No Question.
| Question Type | Description | Examples |
| Start Date | Asks when the candidate can start at the new position. Unique to the Closing section. Rating is based on two weeks from an offer (not configurable). | "How soon after an offer can you start?" |
| Closing | Asks the candidate for contact information and displays a user-defined message. Unique to the Closing section. If the candidate passes the interview, the bot displays the custom passing message; otherwise it displays a default closing message. |
On passing: "Could I get your full name?" / "What's your email address?" / "What's your phone number?" Otherwise: "We're all set. Thank you for interviewing with me today!" |
Test an Interview Bot
Click Test Bot on the right side of the Interview Builder screen to test an interview before sending it to candidates.
A copy of the PIXEL chatbot launches in the lower right corner of the screen. Answer the interview questions as a candidate would to verify the flow and scoring.
Associate a Bot with Jobs
Once the interview script is complete, click Next: Associate Bot to attach the interview to job postings. The Associate Bot screen appears.
Jobs connected with this bot
This is the list of jobs currently connected to the selected interview bot. Click Disconnect to remove the association.
My open jobs not associated with any bot
Jobs for which the user is a Sales Rep or Job Owner that have not yet been associated with an interview bot. Click Connect to associate one with the current bot.
Details shown on the Associate Bot screen:
-
Job/Title ID: Click the link for additional job details in a popup.
- Pass (%): The percentage of interviews for the job that passed the threshold.
- Completed: Count of completed interviews for the job.
- Incomplete: Count of incomplete interviews for the job.
-
Recruiters: If more than one, a "[#] more..." link displays. Click to see all.
- Sales Rep
Click the Copy button to copy the bot link to your clipboard. The Disconnect button removes the job from this interview bot.
My open jobs associated with other bots
Jobs the recruiter has open that are currently associated with different PIXEL bots. Click Connect to associate them with the current bot instead.
Connect a job to a different bot
If a job has had interviews conducted against it by a bot and you try to associate a different bot with it, a confirmation message appears.
Clicking Yes removes the job from the previous bot and associates it with the new one.
Associate a Bot with General Applies
Users with the Interview Bot Admin user claim can attach PIXEL bots to a General Apply job board. With this claim active, the Associate Bot screen includes a General Applies section.
(Click the image for a larger view in a new tab.)
The system shows if there is an existing bot associated with General Apply boards. Click Connect to associate the bot with General Applies in the agency. If an existing bot is already associated, a confirmation alert appears.
(Click the animated image to open a larger view in a new tab.)
This is an all-or-nothing process. Only one bot can be associated with General Applies at a time. If there is more than one General Apply job board, the bot is associated with all of them.
Bots associated with General Applies are delivered the same way as other interview bots. Talent Notifications of the type Application Received are sent. The merge field {{Job/Position Name}} is not used; the General Apply job board name is used in its place.
After a talent completes a General Apply workflow, a text message is delivered using the service user's phone number, sent according to the Talent Notification — Unclaimed Talent Queue — Application Received type. The message includes the associated interview bot.
Use the Talent > Unclaimed Talent screen to see which candidates have responded to General Apply interview bots. Click a candidate's name to review their scores. To assign a candidate to yourself, select them and click Assign To Me. This displays the talent's interview results on your PIXEL Interviews screen and appoints you as the representative on their profile. You can filter the Unclaimed Talent view by Office.
Sending PIXEL Bots
There are four ways to send or use a PIXEL bot:
- Avionté Chat composer: Use the + button in Quick Chat and select Add PIXEL Bot. See Avionté Chat – PIXEL for details.
- Talent apply through a job with a bot attached: The bot is automatically sent when a talent applies to a job that has a PIXEL bot associated.
- Send through a talent record: From the talent profile, use the Chat button in Quick Actions to start a conversation and send the bot from the composer.
- Start Chat (Mass Messaging): Select talent in Talent Search or a job's candidate management screen and use Start Chat from Mass Actions. See Avionté Chat – PIXEL for details on mass messaging with PIXEL Bots.
Bot Settings
To view the settings for a bot, click Bot Settings on the Interview Builder screen.
The Bot Settings popup appears.
- Change the Status of a bot to Inactive (deactivate it) or restore it to Active. Inactive bots cannot be sent to talent.
- Change the Passing Percent required for an interview to succeed. Candidates must pass all required questions and meet the minimum score percent for PIXEL to offer a follow-up interview.
- Click Delete a Bot to permanently remove the bot. A confirmation screen appears. Clicking Yes confirms deletion. Interview results associated with the deleted bot are kept for future reference.
How PIXEL Calculates Interview Ratings
The details in this section help you decide what options to set for each question type. Each question's Weight and Required/Preferred setting affects how candidates are scored and whether a follow-up interview is offered.
| Question Type | Rating type and scoring mechanism | Required/Preferred setting effects |
| Work Authorization | Pass or Fail. "0" points or all points depending on weight. | Scoring is ignored. If set to Required and the applicant fails, no interview is scheduled. |
| Education | Linear. At or above the desired level gets full points. | If below desired level: Preferred = simple linear formula. Required = "0" rating, no interview scheduled. |
| Commute Time | If within 30 minutes, maximum points are allotted. Otherwise, the question fails. The 30-minute range is hard-coded and not configurable. | "0" points if not within acceptable distance (Required and Preferred). |
| Yes or No Question | Pass or Fail. 0 points or all points depending on weight. | Scoring is ignored. If set to Required and the applicant fails, no interview is scheduled. |
| Salary | If within the ideal range, maximum points. If not, check Required or Preferred. | Required: "0" rating, no interview scheduled. Preferred: Linear. An acceptable limit exists if within 120% of the acceptable range (e.g., if the acceptable range is $80k–$100k and the applicant answers $110, they receive half of max points; at $120, they receive "0" points). Calculated from the applicant's minimum acceptable amount. |
| Security Clearance | Linear. At or above the desired level gives full points; below desired, see Required/Preferred. | Preferred: simple linear formula. Required: "0" rating, no interview scheduled. |
| Skills | At or above the desired level gives maximum points. Below, see Required/Preferred. | Preferred: score calculated on a curve (parabola). Required: applicant receives a linear score. In both cases, the score is adjusted for confidence level. |
| Start Date (2 weeks) | If within 2 weeks, maximum points (2 weeks is hard-coded, not configurable). If 2–6 weeks, check Required/Preferred. If greater than 6 weeks, "0" points and no interview scheduled. | Required: "0" rating, no interview scheduled. Preferred: Linear, based on date range. |
Simple Linear Formula Example
(Used when responses equate a numeric value, e.g., Education with 5 levels)
Doctoral = 5; Masters = 4; Bachelors = 3; Associates = 2; High School/GED = 1; None = 0
Equation:
Math.round((userInput / requirement) * MAX_ANSWER_SCORE * weight)
Example: Weight = 5; Desired level = 4; User input = 3
(3/4) * 5 * 5 = 19 (or 76%)
Weight Reference
0 = Not scored (receives emoji indicator)
1 = 5 pts
2 = 10 pts
3 = 15 pts
4 = 20 pts
5 = 25 pts
Commute Time Detail
The system uses the associated job's work site address from BOLD to calculate the distance between the talent's home address and the work site.
Associate the bot with a job in BOLD that has a valid address so the system can calculate the Location portion of the Logistical Match accurately.
Calculations use the Google Maps API. If an address is incorrect, the API attempts to find the closest match. If completely omitted, the interview will not be rated correctly. For more information on entering a worksite, see Create and Manage Company Offices.
